IMPACT Summer Program 2024

Understanding Dyslexia and Dysgraphia

Before diving into the details of our summer program, it’s essential to understand what dyslexia and dysgraphia entail. Both are neurological issues where; Dyslexia is a learning difficulty characterized by inaccurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling abilities. Dysgraphia, on the other hand, affects a person’s handwriting and fine motor skills, making writing tasks challenging. Both conditions can make traditional educational settings challenging, but they also open doors to creative and innovative teaching methods.

The Vision of Our Summer Program

Our program is built on the belief that every student has the potential to succeed when given the right tools and support. We aim to create an environment where students feel understood, valued, and empowered to explore their abilities without the pressure of conventional academic expectations. Here’s a glimpse into the core components of our program:

  • Individualized Learning Plans: Each student in our program has a personalized learning plan tailored to their specific needs and strengths. We collaborate with parents, educators, and the students themselves to set achievable goals and design activities that cater to their unique learning styles.
  • Multisensory Instruction: Understanding that traditional methods may not be effective for all, we incorporate multisensory instruction into our teaching. This approach engages multiple senses simultaneously visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile helping students better grasp and retain information.
  • Assistive Technology: Technology plays a significant role in our program. Tools like speech-to-text software and apps are utilized to support reading and writing tasks. These technologies not only aid in learning but also boost students’ confidence in their abilities.
  • Creative Expression: We place a strong emphasis on creative expression through art, music, drama, and hands-on projects. These activities allow students to showcase their talents, build self-esteem, and develop new skills in a fun and engaging way.
  • Social and Emotional Support: Learning differences often come with social and emotional challenges. Our program includes activities designed to foster social skills, build friendships, and provide emotional support. Group discussions, team-building exercises, and mindfulness practices are integral parts of our daily schedule.

Parental Involvement
We believe that parental involvement is crucial to the success of our program. Regular communication with parents ensures that they are informed about their child’s progress and can reinforce learning strategies at home. We also provide resources and workshops for parents to help them better understand and support their child’s unique learning needs.
